Music in games is SUCH an amazing thing! It's not really neccesary, but something about how it can dance with the gameplay- it's so cool. Imagine: you as the player aproach the big boss room and the music slowly builds up distantly as you approach. That is so much more exciting then an akward silence. That's music's talent. It infulences the mood and experiences whilst not being in your face, at least not most of the time.
If you want to see this in action, go play a game that has music and turn it off. Play for a while and then turn it back on. Trust me, you'll definently notice the difference.

Now don't feel intimidated and pressured to meet that for your own game, be inspired, what's good for you and your game will come.
